opened it's doors on April 1, 2015, which is a very appropriate day to open a place like this. Since starting up with a small menu of seven hot dogs, we've grown our menu way beyond just hot dogs and have become Hastings Sunrise's premier punk rock vegan-friendly shop serving pub style comfort food made with high quality ethical meats and made from scratch vegan items in an inclusive environment where we take no crap from bros, watch baseball in the summer and dumb movies in the winter, and the music is usually a bit too loud.
We try to keep things as cheap as we can with two weekly wing nights (vegan wings on Mondays, regular wing night on Wednesdays), a $3.75 happy hour every day (3-6pm including weekends), and a different daily special for every day of the week. We love baseball and will play any game you want on our big screen (after the Jays), but if you ask for hockey or football or anything else, we might not be able to hear you. We take care of your kids in the daytime and your drunk uncle at night. We have a random assortment of board games you can play, including two "sensual puzzles" we recommend for 18 and over only, please. And we have a rotating selection of pinball games courtesy of East Van Amusements.
The full bar and cocktail menu was set up by our bar manager Rad Jockstrap, who we think might be the most fun bartender in the city. He invented the Spicy Boy (tequila w/ banana pepper brine) which put us on the map to the point that some of our customers have even gotten Spicy Boy tattoos. We drink a lot of PBR. I mean, a lot. It's our best seller. We have mediocre coffee. We have brunch on Saturdays and Sundays from noon-3. We dressed up the entire shop as Bob's Burgers three Halloweens in a row. We have DJs from time to time. Two of us are 90% sure Brad Pitt came here once. All of us are 100% sure that Billie Joe Armstrong (Green Day) came in once (and we never got over it). We are actively trying to set a hot dog related Guiness World Record (more on that soon). Basically, our motto is "never be boring" and we try our best to live up to that, every day.
Our franks are custom made for us and our ground beef is supplied by Two Rivers Speciality Meats in an ethical program free from hormones and featuring grass fed livestock. It's the best meat we've had from a company we trust. Nearly all of our sauces are made in house to be vegan and therefore almost the entire menu has vegan options. We currently feature Field Roast veggie franks and Beyond Meat patties, alongside our house made Vegan Nashville Hot Chicken patty and our gluten free cauliflower vegan wings. We take pride in our vegan menu and as our regulars have noticed, our focus has shifted to it quite dramatically over the past four years.

The East Village is in Manhattan. Where we are located is called Hastings Sunrise.
CJ is the most underrated Ramone, and Marky is the most overrated.
Ed The Sock ate here once. Still waiting on Rachel Perry.
We once accidentally put crushed tomatoes in all the ketchup bottles instead of ketchup and no one said anything until nearly 8 hours after open.
Our dumbest ever event was a summer themed NYE celebration a couple years back called "TOO MANY BEACH BALLS", where we spent weeks buying all the beach balls we could find, filling them all with air, and loading the shop with them. It was very difficult for customers to get around, and even harder to serve them. There was quite literally, TOO MANY BEACH BALLS. We had to cancel New Years Brunch because deflating 300 beach balls actually takes quite a lot of time.
What's Up? Hot Dog! is on unceded Coast Salish territories.
